Sketches and designs for commissions
For every project I take on, whether it be for a client, a family member or for me personally, I always start with a hand drawn sketch. This allows me to list on the page, all of the parameters of the project.
For instance: environment, space, obstacles and restrictions are just some of the considerations I make when doing the initial sketch. I believe doing this at the earliest possible stage of a project allows for a better designed piece and also avoids any costly mistakes or design flaws. Once I am happy with the sketch and have made sure that I have all the information I require, I can move to the computer.
Depending on the project, I will either use AutoCAD or SketchUp to produce working drawing and a 3D visualisation of the project. Usually I use both packages when doing a commission as it provides me with substantial working drawings and the client can see a direct representation of what the finished project will look like. Once I have these drawings complete, I will send them to the client along with a cost breakdown. When we have an agreement, the manufacturing process can begin.
